While in photography school Robert never envisioned being a wedding photographer in New York City, wedding photography was stale and formal most wedding albums, even in NYC looked the same, just different Brides and Grooms. His business first flourished as a commercial photographer but as cameras and film progressed, the time became right to re envision wedding photography. Robert began to create his unique vision and style he coined “artistic reportage” a blending of art and photojournalism. He is unobtrusive. ..he captures intimate moments...the passion of the day, and yet the Bride and Groom are seldom aware of his presence.
“I would say that one of my strongest influences has been the photography and writing of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Like him, I do not wish to be constrained by preconception, but approach each wedding with an intuitive sense of form and visual story. Some images may seem accidental, yet within my camera they were well thought out. I strive to extract a moment of meaning out of each click of the shutter...to not only document a wedding, but to evoke the dreams and intensity of life which is being manifest in this one decisive moment.”
After graduating with honours in Photography from RIT, Robert moved directly to NYC where he assisted numerous top photographers including celebrity and Vanity Fair cover shooter Firooz Zahedi. Robert opened his own studio gathering an increasing list of high profile clients, including Cosmopolitan, Tommy Hilfiger, and RCA Records.
After a few years Robert expanded into weddings taking advantage of new film and camera technologies he started to develop his own techniques, enabling him to capture the wedding as a visual storyteller. “We pose for portraits, but asking a Bride and Groom to continually pose throughout their wedding day made no visual sense to me.” Recognition by the wedding industry was swift, including a feature in the popular web site Daily Candy, publication in Modern Bride multiple times, features in theknot website and a television presentation on “Toni On!” with TV anchor Toni Senecal. Robert has been listed in New York Magazine’s “Best of Issue” continuously since 2004. Robert remains stylistically broad, not being limited to one style or technique, photographing a wedding in Mexico one day and then returning for a product shoot for Ralph Lauren the next.
